What happened to George Lucas that makes his new material bad?

As a kid I loved the original Star Wars and Indy trilogies. Heck, American Graffiti is a very good film, too. But that was a long time ago and he makes very little (writer, producer, etc). What he does make, including the prequels and Crystal Skull, are CLEARLY inferior products. I won't debate how bad b/c they weren't terrible, just inferior to the originals. Why do you think the new films suck by comparison? Is this a case of peaking too early in a creative career? Or maybe changing times or audience?
